Porsche 944 Turbo Cup & 964/993 — Hardest-to-Find Parts
Axle mounts, VDO instruments, and the NLA parts crisis. What's still available, what's gone, and who can still help.
Cars covered: Porsche 944 Turbo Cup (1983–1991) · Porsche 911 964 (1989–1994) · Porsche 911 993 (1994–1998)
These three form a progression of increasingly specialised, increasingly expensive air-cooled and early water-cooled Porsches. The 944 Turbo Cup is the outsider — a rear-wheel-drive transaxle coupe with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine. The 964 and 993 are the last air-cooled 911s, and they've been objects of obsessive collector demand for years. That demand has destroyed parts availability for everything except the most commercially viable items.
The NLA Crisis — Why These Cars Are Different
With the 911, Porsche maintained a Classic parts programme that has kept many items available well beyond production end. The 944 never received that same support. The 964 and 993 are now at the age where even Porsche Classic cannot remake everything — the volumes simply don't justify retooling for some components. The result is a two-tier availability problem: common maintenance items remain accessible; anything unusual is either extinct or sourced from a specialist who has spent years building an inventory.
Porsche 944 Turbo Cup — Axle Support Mounts
The cast aluminium axle support mounts on the 944 Turbo Cup are specific to that car. They are not shared with any other 944 variant. Porsche discontinued them as NLA — meaning there is no official route to new stock, and the tooling will not be restarted for a car that raced in the early 1980s.
The options in 2026:
- Rose Passion — French specialist that reproduces NLA 944 parts. The best option for a period-correct repair if they're in stock.
- Billet aluminium aftermarket — Rennlist vendors supply a billet aluminium replacement set, approximately $249 per set. Structurally stronger than the original cast aluminium. Check current Rennlist classifieds and vendor sections.
- 3D scanning and printing — If you have access to an original mount, several firms now offer scanning-to-print for NLA aluminium castings. Quality varies; get references before committing.
- Urethane bushing conversions — Some shops offer a urethane bushing conversion that replaces the entire assembly with a modern, maintenance-free setup. Increases NVH but improves longevity.
Porsche 964 / 993 — VDO Speedometer & Instrument Cluster
The VDO instrument cluster in the 964 and 993 is the most commonly cited failure point. The odometer gear is the usual culprit — the plastic wears and the miles stop counting. VDO stopped production of the movement and the gear. Getting a cluster repaired now requires a specialist.

Porsche Classic
Remake-on-request programme for many parts. Price is high and lead times can be long, but for safety-critical or structural items it's the most reliable official route. Always check with them first for anything structural.
964 / 993 — Engine Management & DME
The Motronic ML 4.3 ECU in the 964 is now failing in high-mileage cars. Porsche Classic runs a rebuild programme specifically for these units — contact them with your chassis number for a quote and lead time. This is the preferred route before committing to a full standalone replacement.
If the Porsche Classic route isn't viable, the established workaround is a standalone engine management system: Haltech, MegaSquirt, or AEM are all well-supported in the 964/993 community. This requires additional wiring work and sensor provisioning but gives significantly more tuning flexibility. For a track car or high-performance build, it's a reasonable choice. For a concourse restoration, Porsche Classic rebuild is preferable.
