Vehicle & Part Overview
The 1977 Austin Princess (the "Wedge") was produced with several engine configurations that dictate the exhaust system required. For the 1800cc B-Series (4-cylinder) engine, the system is distinct from the 2200cc E6-Series (6-cylinder), which uses a more complex manifold and twin-downpipe arrangement. Because the Princess is a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicle, the front downpipe features specific bends designed to clear the subframe and steering rack.
Engine Verification
The Austin Princess was originally fitted with the following engines:
- 1700cc / 2000cc (O-Series)
- 1800cc (B-Series)
- 2200cc (E6-Series)
Note: The Princess was not factory-fitted with a 1000cc engine. If a vehicle features a 1000cc (998cc) A-Series engine, it may be an Austin Mini or Austin Allegro, which require different exhaust components.
Exhaust System Components (1800cc B-Series)
- Front Downpipe: Connects directly to the manifold (Part Number: GEX1181).
- Center Section (Silencer/Resonator): (Part Number: GEX1182).
- Rear Link Pipe
- Rear Silencer (Tailpipe box/Muffler): (Part Number: GEX1183).
- Manifold Gasket: Standard B-Series gasket (Part Number: GEG601).
Sourcing Recommendations
Finding "shelf-stock" mild steel exhausts for the Princess is difficult due to the rarity of the vehicle. Many owners opt for Quality Reproduction Stainless Steel systems. While more expensive, they offer increased longevity and a modified exhaust note.
- eBay: A primary source for NOS (New Old Stock) mild steel sections. Look for original Unipart or Quinton Hazell stock.
