Peugeot 205 CTi (1985) — Rear Seat Cover & Foam Replacement Guide

Vehicle & Part Overview

Vehicle: 1985 Peugeot 205 CTi (Cabriolet / Pininfarina convertible body)
Part required: Rear seat bench — cover and foam/cushion padding layer

The 205 CTi convertible has a unique rear seat design specific to the convertible bodyshell. It sits lower-profile than the standard hatchback bench to accommodate the folding roof mechanism and reduced cabin height.

⚠️ Fitment warning: A standard 205 hatchback rear seat will not fit correctly. Mounting points and dimensions differ. Always source CTi-specific seats and trim.

The job splits into two separate items:

  • Seat foam/cushion padding — rear base cushion and/or backrest foam
  • Seat cover/trim — fabric or vinyl covering

Foam Replacement

Original 205 CTi rear seat foam as NOS is essentially unobtainable. The practical route is custom-cut replacement foam matched to your original dimensions.

Recommended foam grades:

  • Seat base: High-density reconstituted foam (45kg/m³ minimum)
  • Backrest: Medium-density foam (35kg/m³)
💡 Tip: Take your old foam along or send dimensions to the supplier. If the original foam has compressed rather than crumbled, a trimmer can use it as a template for an exact replacement.

Seat Cover Options

Option 1 — Pattern Covers

Generic 205 seat covers exist, but CTi-specific rear covers are rarely produced by pattern manufacturers. Hatchback covers will not fit correctly and should be avoided.

Option 2 — Retrim with Matching Fabric

This is the most reliable route for a correct finish on a CTi. A trimmer with classic car experience can work from a photo of the original fabric pattern if you want to match it.

The 1985 CTi typically came with:

  • Grey sport fabric
  • Red/black sport fabric
  • Full leather (on some specifications)

Sourcing Recommendations

If a full seat assembly is needed rather than a retrim, the salvage route is the most realistic option for a correctly fitting, colour-matched original.

Safety & Fitment Notes

  • Seat foam density matters for occupant safety — do not substitute with low-density decorative foam
  • Confirm whether your car retains its original trim colour and material before ordering covers, as 1985 CTi interiors varied by specification
  • If only the covering is worn and the foam and frame are structurally sound, a retrim is the most practical and cost-effective solution and avoids the difficulty of locating a correct used assembly
